First practice of making example posters and Poster Research

To create the posters for our teaser trailer we have used the software Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrate. We have been practising making tester posters using this software ready for when we want to make our real poster for our teaser trailer. I have used an image I have taken that will be easy to edit and manipulate because it was on a simple background.

Props Mood Board and Props we will/may use and Progress Diary

As our killer is supposed to look threatening to his victims he will need weapons and props. We have looked at different films to see what props are used in them, mainly the killers weapons. We would like to include loads of different weapons which hints to the audience that the victims will all die in a very different ways instead of all getting stabbed. In the film Scream he uses the classic butcher knives to kill his victims, this is a typical weapon used in horror films and are commonly used. List of weapons: -Knives -Ropes - Electrocution (e.g. Electricals being used in water) - Suprising weapons such as a pen?

Props we will use:

We will be using certain props in our teaser trailer to make it more realistic:

  • Fake Blood

  • Blankets and pillows for Matty when he plays the younger version of Lewis

  • The Candle

  • Knives for weapons

  • Photos of the victims on the wall

Progress Diary

We think we will be ready to film towards the end of this week, we will be filming the parts Matty are in on the Thursday, on the Friday and Saturday we will try to film the rest of the fast paced shots.

Audience Profiles and Rating

We have been thinking about the audience for our teaser trailer. We have looked at the similar genres and story lines and what rating they were given.

The first film we looked at was The Strangers, the rating for this film was 15.

Another film which is of a similar genre is Orphan, about a 9 year old girl who isnt as innocent as she looks. This film also had a rating of 15.

From looking at the percentage of people who went to see the Strangers we have found that people from the age of 15-24 went to see the Strangers more than people of any other age and mainly women went to see this film. Whereas, with Orphan there was a high range of ages that went to see this film, mainly from the age of 15-24 but also 45+ it was quite popular. A difference between the two films is they said more men would go, closely followed by women. This has been compared to The Omen which seemed to be a film for both men and women as it was roughly 50% for men and 50% for women. This shows that our type of film which has some similarites between these two films could be 50-50 and people from the age of 15-24.

Our Idea Rating and Audience

We have decided that there will be slightly more women who will watch our teaser.

60%- Women

40%- Men

We have also predicted that the age range would be more 15-24 year olds.

4-6: 0%

7-11: 0%

12-14: 0%

15-24: 80%

25-34: 5%

35- 44: 5%

45+ : 10%

We have also given our film a rating of 15.

Orphan teaser trailer and Poster

I am looking at the film Orphan because this is a horror and also is a psychological one.

Genre: From the trailer you can see that the film is a psychological horror that is different because the audience have no idea what is wrong with this girl. There is also an element of thriller because there are many jumpy scenes. This is quite similar to the genre we would like to use for our own teaser trailer.

Narrative: It shows a normal family living everyday life but have recently lost there baby, the family decide that they would like to adopt instead of try for another baby, they choose to adopt an older child and when they get to the adoption place they find a girl who is very different from the rest of the girls there, she is old fashioned and very mature for her age. They take her home to meet the family and then they start to find out there is something wrong with this girl as she starts doing odd things and trying to scare the children, we see her setting fire to a treehouse with the boy in it and pushing a girl of the playground slide and pushing a young girl in front of the car, there is obviously a big secret she is hiding but this is not clear to the audience at all in the trailer, the narrative of the trailer is then left on a cliffhanger.

This teaser poster has a very interesting tag line, there's something wrong with esther, this is very interesting combined with the image, which is the girl looking emotionless with light coming from above her shadowing certain parts of her face, we can see from this picture she is very old fashioned. All this combined witht he title Orphan is very creepy, the text is typical for the horror genre, with the scratchy lines. This poster is very simple but very effective in a way that this character has alot of mystery behind her. The text is also similar to the Uninvited title text which shows that they are quite similar as they are from the same sub genre psychogical horror.

The Uninvited Teaser Trailer and Poster

I have decided to look at the Uninvited which is a psychological horror which plays with the audiences minds. I will be looking at the components of the trailer for this film as I could not find a teaser and look at how the components are effective.

Genre: The genre from this trailer is very clear that it is a horror. In the category of horror it would come under psychological horror as it messes with the audiences mind, there is also a sense of thriller within the genre because there are moments which scare the audience and make them jump. Using shots that make the audience jump is very effective for horror genre as it keeps the audience on the edge of there seats.

Narrative: The narrative of the trailer shows the audience the main character a girl who comes home after being away as her mother died in a fire, when she comes back she finds out that her dad has a new girlfriend who she soon becomes suspicious about, she thinks that the new girlfriend is a murderer. The trailer shows quite quick shots that show scary scenes, this trailer uses alot of the silent pauses then the music builds up again. This keeps the audience interested as there is lots of suspense used.
This is the poster for the film The Uninvited, it is very ambiguous as it hides the characters identity, it is very dark and spooky which shows the genre. The text used is also very creepy like in horror movies when people write in blood and the size of the letters vary. This poster is very effective for the horror genre and looks interesting the mystery behind the character makes the audience want to know more. With the title the uninvited and a girl in the shadows looking in through a window makes the audience think why is she looking through the window like that, why is her identity hidden and why or who is uninvited.

Progress Diary- Time Management

We have changed our idea to one we feel is similar to the ones we have researched and would be more like a psychological horror, it also uses quick shots which we believe is more effective. We have been looking at new location ideas and a range of shots we would like to add. We will use our animatic as a guideline for when we film and add new shots in as we go. We are ready to film this weekend.

New Location Ideas

As our new idea for our teaser uses lots of locations we have to take a range of pictures of possible locations. We will be filming some shots inside and some shots outside. Inside shots will be in my house and Lewis' house, these will mostly be in the dark like the killer has turned the power off. The outside shots will either be down roads and streets, possibly a train station and possibly in the woods. Here are some pictures from locations we will use. The first image is of where the little boy sleeps, he doesnt have much space and the only light he has is candle light.

Shot List

This is a rough idea of the shots we would like to include.

  • Black Screen
  • Dips to white and you see a door slowly opening revealing a dark room
  • The door gets wider and you see a little boy sitting in the corner looking sad
  • A wall in the same room shows pictures on a wall with the eyes of the faces of the people cut out and crosses on there faces. The boy disappears.
  • The boy appears again as you see him sitting in the corner.
  • We then see the pictures on the wall flash up again
  • It goes back to the boy, he slowly turns to look at the camera as it cuts to black.
  • We then see a flash of a long dark corridor
  • We then see one of the victims running
  • It then focuses on a weapon eg. A knife
  • We see hands covered in blood
  • A body laying on the floor in a dark room.
  • Sooming turning round quickly looking scared
  • More people running
  • A sign saying something like "Your Dead".
  • A flash of the little boy in the corner of the room
  • Someone standing we can see the legs they are looking out to room, a knife in there hand covered in blood.
  • More victims running
  • A dog with a mouth covered in blood
  • Someone being dragged
  • Someone cowering in a room shouting go away.
  • More blood on peoples clothes screaming
  • Another victim running.
  • A body wrapped in a blanket
  • A hand opening a door
  • Someone closing a mirror with the killer behind them
  • More running
  • The little boy standing looking down at the floor
  • The attacker putting his hand over the victims mouth and her gasping
  • Black Screen
