Progress Diary

We are nearly ready to film, it might take us a couple of nights to complete filming as it gets dark very quickly. We will have to work quickly when we get to the location. It will have to be an afternoon/evening where we are all free and can film.

Teaser Trailer Plot and Full Film

This is the plot for the teaser trailer:

Three media students, a girl and two boys are going into the woods and foggy fields to create a video presentation for one of their subjects at school for their coursework. When they reach the location it is already getting dark, they all joke around and try scaring each other, the girl starts getting serious and angry that they are not getting any work done. They start filming and after a couple of shots of them laughing when being filmed the screen goes black, you can hear the laughter turning into screams and the next thing you see is one if the boys has collapsed, the two other students panic and try to wake him but he is unconscious they dont understand what has happened, while they are trying to wake him a mysterious attacker hits the boy who is filming and knocks him out, The camera drops and you can see the unconcious bodies lying on the floor, the female character screams at what she has seen and runs off, the attacker is still a mystery to the audience. Through the camera that is lying on the floor you see the girl running across the field to get away. The mystery attacker then picks up the camera that was dropped on the floor and starts fiddling with buttons, now as the attacker is holding the camera we can see the bodies still lying on the floor. The attacker then presses the power button and the camera dies. We will then have the title of the film.

The characters that are involved in the teaser trailer will not be present in the actual film, these are scenes that are not seen in the final film. They may be similar to the story line of the film but the characters change. The area they went to film in is normally quite popular for students to use for their coursework.

Title for Our Teaser Trailer

We have been thinking about the different titles we would like to call our teaser trailer, We quite like the short names that other films have that use handheld camera like Quarantine or Rec. We have been looking at the names of the films we have researched and using these to think of an idea we could use.

So far we have:
-Playback ( Referring to playing footage back on a camera and also it sounds like pay back which hints at someone maybe wants payback from the people in the film).

Time Management- Progress Diary

We have been thinking about certain characters we would like to include in our teaser trailer and the other elements such as location, costume, and props. We have also been thinking about what sort of script we would like to use, we will then need to plan what shots we are including and how they will be effective in our teaser trailer. So far we have decided that we would like to do a psychological horror, making our teaser very tense and keeping the audience scared.

Our Idea PowerPoint and Feedback

Script for our Teaser Trailer

There is not alot of speech dialogue there are more sound effects such as screams and laughter.

Amy: Lets film over here

Next Clip

Chris: This is our presentation (burst out laughing)

Next Clip

Lewis: Amy look behind you!

Amy: (Scared) Thats not funny

Next Clip

Chris: Come on we need to finish this today

Next Clip- ( They are laughing and joking over a black screen, the laughter then turns to screams) We then see Chris has collapsed on the floor

Amy: Chris, Chris are you ok? (Pushing Chris and trying to wake him up)

Lewis: Is he breathing?

(We then hear a thud and you cannot hear Lewis anymore, the camera drops to the ground and you see him collapse in front of it. From the view of the camera of the floor you see Amy screaming and running into the distance. As you see her dissappearing the camera then gets picked up by the mystery attacker and he fiddles with buttons and you can see Lewis' body on the ground as the attacker holds the camera and then it cuts off.

End

Character Profiles

There are three characters in our teaser trailer. A girl and two boys are making a film in the woods and foggy fields. Our characters are all teenagers and are making a film for their college work.

Amy- I will be playing the girl role in our teaser trailer, so she will look like me, such as blonde hair and wears normal clothes a teenage girl would wear.
Lewis- Lewis who is in my group with me will play the character that is filming what happens.
Chris- The last character will be played by our friend Chris, he will play the part of talking through the coursework with my character.

Research for our Teaser Components

Soundtrack research: We have been thinking about whether we need to include a soundtrack to our teaser trailer. Quite alot of the short teaser trailers do not use a soundtrack and just use dialogue and sound effects. We would like to include a soundtrack with a fast pace that makes the quick shots we are using look more effective. Costume and location research: Costumes in pyshcological horror are normally casual and everyday, in some cases they are very casual and are pyjamas. For our teaser trailer we will most likely follow this idea and use casual clothes as our characters are teenagers. They are going out filming in the winter so will most likely be wrapping up warm. For the location most horror genres are filmed in the middle of nowhere outside in the woods or in a lone house. The location and setting is normally a key element that helps create the sense of fear. After researching locations that are normally used in pyschological horror we have decided to film ours in a field nearby my house, another reason we have chosen this location is because the plot of our teaser trailer which will be filmed outside. We may also film some footage inside a house. Actors and props photos research: Psychological horror's normally include a stereotypical blonde that gets into trouble and her friends normally are killed off too. For example in Scream Drew Barrymore is this stereotypical blonde character that gets killed. She is also well known and a wide audience will watch films with well known actors in them. Our characters and actors include a blonde girl, a boy who is helping acting in there filming and the boy who is filming this, the actors will be me, Lewis who is in my group and our friend Chris. Props normally include weapons and objects that are used as weapons. These are normally emphasised and focused on which makes the audience uneasy. In our teaser trailer teh only prop we will be using is the camera which is being used to film our teaser trailer. Teaser Trailer Analysis Research: I have analysed afew teaser trailers of different genres and then some more of the genre we have chosen. After researching the components of a teaser trailer and what is needed it has given Lewis and I an idea of what we would like to include in our teaser trailer, it has also given us an idea of what not to show and what not to include.

Basic Shot Descriptions and chosen Idea

We have chosen to go with Idea 1 for our teaser trailer.

This is a basic shot description of the shots we are including in our teaser trailer.

Idea 2 for Psychological Horror

We have thought about other ideas we could use for our teaser trailer as we cannot decide what to include. Lewis had an idea which used a blinking effect, that you were looking though someones eyes and seeing what was happening and when they blink the scene changes, We looked on adobe premiere elements which is what we will use to edit our teaser trailer and there was no special effect that we could use to create it. His idea involved a character male or female was doing every day activites like working and being at home but when he blinked he could see a shadowed figure in a dark field, he blinked again and was back to normal day life, but when he blinked after that the shadowed figure was closer. This is a rough idea of what we could do.

Idea 1 For Psychological Horror

A group of students are making a film for one of there courses at school. When they decide to film it is dark and foggy, they walk through fields and woods. They joke at scaring each other while filming, shows documentary footage of them talking about what they are going to do and joking about someone coming to get them. The screen goes black and laughter turns to screams. the camera is dropped on the floor and you can see someone sitting on the floor cowering and crying. She reaches for the camera and says something like someone help me. They camera is dropped and she is dragged away from the camera and the screams continue of the black screen.

Characters-
  • Girl who gets attacked
  • Boy filming
  • Other boy filming

Location-

Outside, on a field. Dark and foggy. Like location images below

Other Location Ideas

We have been thinking about more location ideas for our teaser trailer. We still have not got a final idea so thinking of locations could help.

Monday, 8 November 2010

Time Management- Progress Diary

I have been researching horror teaser trailers to get inspiration to add to our idea. I have also added YouTube videos to show the difference in content between them all. So far we have made progress in deciding ideas and preparing to film.

Psychological Horror Films

Questionairre for Horror Genre

This is the questionnaire we will ask people of different ages about the horror genre. I will then show the results later.

Location Ideas

We have been thinking about location ideas for creating our teaser trailer. Lewis and I thought maybe the location we used for our first film, the lake and the woods. Another location we thought we might use is a dark room in a house and either use it as a dark room for a location or use text to make it seem like another location, for example "they entered the woods", but we would be filming in the room. As our idea is only a draft idea we need to think about what places could work with the idea and if any changes are made they wont affect the location or idea.

These are images from the lake and the woods from our year 12 opening sequence location. We may be using this for our location in our teaser trailer.

What we would like to do for our Teaser Trailer

Lewis and I have come up with a vague idea of what we would like to create for our Teaser Trailer, we think the teaser trailers like Buried, Up and Blair Witch Project are very effective and we would like to make one like this, little footage but the footage being very effective.

The genre will be horror, but pyschological horror. The story lines that have inspired us are The Strangers, Scream and Wolf Creek, horrors that include real people instead of fictional characters such as montsers or aliens. These films are effective as they involve the audience more as these things that happen in these films could happen in real life. We like the idea of the pyscho people who target a person or a group of people.

Another factor we would like to include is the effectiveness of using handheld camera, we would like the scene to be like Blair Witch Project, Quarantine and Cloverfield that use handheld camera to show the story.

Mood Board- Weapons and Scenes from Horror films

Poster Research

Here I have shown a range of teaser posters for the horror genre, for one of our ancillary tasks we have to create a teaser poster for our teaser trailer.
Most of the teaser posters are very simple, with a clear image and text that shows the horror genre, the images are very central and mainly of people with blood on them or characters that are relevant to the story. The images are quite disturbing, for example for the film called the Eye, there is a picture of an eye wide open with a hand coming out of it, these sort of images make your skin crawl and very clearly show the genre.

Quarantine Teaser Trailer

Quarantine is more of a gore horror, because there are endless amounts of blood and people who have caught some disease, these types of films where people become infected are quite common, the only difference between these films is the way they become infected.

I have chosen to look at this teaser because I like the use of the handheld camera, and we see it all as if we were there looking at what is happening, this is scary because it involves the audience more and they see eveything even closer as the scary things happen right infront of the audience faces. I also like the use of the night vision in this teaser, it is very effective and spooky as there is a sense of unknown, what is in the dark room behind the people and keeps the audience on the edge of there seats as they do not know whether something is going to jump out of th darkness. I think the way this teaser ends with the girl being dragged into the darkness os very effective.

Disturbia Trailer

I have included the Disturbia Trailer as I could not find a teaser trailer.

This trailer shows the genre, by the use of blood, thrill and weapons shown.

This is typical of a horror because it has the neighbour is the killer but no one believes the boy/girl that have got into trouble. I have chosen to add this trailer to my research because i wanted to include a range of different types of horror films. Aswell as a horror this trailer hints that it has a bit of a romance, boy meets girl type story, many horrors have this hint of romance where one minute you think your watching a rom com but then someone gets murdered, these type of horrors have more of a female audience because of the storyline.

Blair Witch Project Teaser Trailer

This teaser trailer is different from other teaser trailers as it shows reviews from people saying things like "scarier than the Exorcist". These quotes are not normally used in teaser trailers but normally are used in trailers. Which would make this teaser trailer in between being a teaser and a trailer. It is the short enough length to be a teaser.

This teaser trailer is very simple and is quite similar to the Buried teaser trailer. For quite along time of the teaser there is a black screen and then some short footage at the end, a difference would be that at the beginning there is text that gives an idea of what the film will be about, which normally teasers are not meant to show.

The Strangers- Teaser Trailer

This is the Strangers teaser trailer, I have decided to analyse this teaser because it is a good example of a psychological horror. It includes the stereotypical horror factor of a couple alone in a house in the middle of nowhere, it is night and they are being targeted by a group of people who enjoy killing people. This film has a great effect on the audience as it says it is based/inspired on true events which makes the story feel even more realistic.

This is very similar to the type of horror we would like to create.

Chosen Genre

The genre we have chosen for our Teaser Trailer is Horror. We are mainly focusing on a component to horror films which is commanly used, this area is psychological horror.

Definition of psychological horror:

Psychological horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that relies on character fears, guilt, beliefs, eerie sound effects, relevant music and emotional instability to build tension and further the plot.

Psychological horror uses real characters such as people killing people, not monsters or aliens killing the people in the story. These are normally very realistic. Location within the genre is normally very important in creating realsim for example a house in the middle of nowhere.

Films that use this genre are:

The Strangers
The Uninvited
Scream
Wolf Creek
The Others
Disturbia

Films that use this genre but also include gore which is not highly used in these films are:

Wrong Turn
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Hills have Eyes
House of Wax
Quarantine

Genre Mood Board- Psychological Horror

Time Management- Progress Diary

To find a starting point for our teaser trailer we have looked at a range of different genres and written about the different elements, what needs to be included and what works well. So far we have been wanting to do a horror genre teaser trailer.

Idea's for Teaser Trailer

My group which is Lewis and I have been thinking about different ideas for our Teaser Trailer project this year.

For our first idea we were thinking about doing a teaser for last years project we did. This would be quite a good idea as we know the story for that film.

Me and Lewis have also got ideas that we would both like to do for the project, we may combine these ideas to create a whole new idea or decide on one of the ideas on its on.

For my idea I was thinking about doing a thriller/mystery genre. I wanted to do a teaser trailer which was similar to the Buried teaser and the Disney PIXAR Up teaser. My first idea was a young girl was running through the woods at night time, she is scared and its dark. She reaches a hill and it starts raining she is covered in mud and is soaking wet, she is disoriented and lost and is scared of what is out in the woods. We wont be able to make this happen but will be lucky if it was raining with thunder and lightning (Or we could try create this using a light and sound effects) it flashes and you see her clearer but then she dissapears even more, as this will be quite dark at real night time we might have to film it when it is starting to get dark to give abit more light. After she is gone and the screen is black there is an ear piercing scream, we do not no what has happened to this girl, whether the footage is going to be in the film and not much of the plot is revealed. This makes it a similar teaser to Buried.

Lewis wanted to create a teaser which used action, he has looked at a James Bond teaser and at the begining not much happens and not much is revealed but it starts speeding up when the action happens. He has no basic idea at the moment of what he wants to do but this is a similar idea.

Genre's for Teaser Trailers

It then starts showing titles and you see Spiderman shoot a web. Unique Selling Point- A new story, new hero. Target Audience- Families with children over 12, mainly males. Pace- Quick paced in parts to show the action but in other parts it is quite slow paced and very long. Jurassic Park Teaser Trailer

This is the Teaser Trailer for Jurassic Park

This Teaser Trailer shows no footage from the actual film, which is quite common in teaser trailers as they are made well in advance of the film being filmed. It also doesn't show any dinosaurs in this teaser which is what the film is going to be about, it makes the audience start thinking about what they are going to look like.

Genre- Science Fiction Narrative- A man digging and finding amber, there being a mosquito inside which DNA will then be extracted from. It zooming in on the mosquito and the big Jurassic Park logo zooms in.

Buried Teaser Trailer

This is the teaser trailer for Buried

Buried is directed by Rodrigo Cortes. The film Buried stars Ryan Reynolds.

Analysis

Genre- The genre for Buried is Thriller, from the teaser trailer you can tell it is meant to be tense and keep the audience at the edge of there seats. Narrative- A man (Ryan Reynolds) has been buried alive and all he has is a lighter and a phone. He has been buried in a coffin underground, he phones the police and cant explain where he is the phone then cuts off. While this is happening there is a black screen, we then see flickering of a lighter in the bottom right corner and see his face then it goes back to a black screen. Unique Selling Point- Is quite an original storyline and it is different from other teasers as it consists of a black screen for most of the teaser. Target Audience- Teenagers to adults. Music- Tense music gets louder towards the end, there is a constant background noise which is unsettling for the audience which adds to the tension. Sound Effects- Background noise from the phone, flickering from lighter and heavy breathing to show the character is panicking. Shot Types/Camera Angles- Black Screen through most of the teaser, same shot the whole way through the camera does not move at all or change image. Long shot which is centered.

Pace- Very slow pace as there is only one shot through the whole teaser

Dialogue and Voice Over- There is dialogue from the main character who is on the phone to someone panicking about being buried alive, we here this over the black screen.

Special Effects- None

Titles- The titles at the end to show the name of the film and showing when the film is being released.

This is very effective because it is very simple but still interests the audience.

Inception Teaser Trailer

I am also analysing the Inception teaser trailer

Analysis

Genre- The genre for Inception is Science Fiction/ Action. Narrative- It shows that one of the characters can do something with there mind, Shows the main character and the location but not the plot of the movie. Unique Selling Point- Inceptions unique selling point is that the story is very unusual and the way the story is presented is very different and new, the teaser plays with the audiences mind which makes them more interested in what the film will be like. Target Audience- People who enjoy challenging films. Teenagers to adults Music- Very tense, droning music is used. There is also a crescendo used which adds the build up all through the teaser trailer until it finishes.

Shot Type- Confusing angles that challenge the audiences view on what is happening, some very close up shots of objects and peoples faces but mainly long shots that zoom but stay the same distance, like we are following the camera through the city.

Pace- Very slow paced to match the tense music

Dialogue and Voice Over- There is no dialoigue or voice over used, just the tense music which makes this more effective.

Special Effects- Lots of special effects are used to show the confusing images, slow motion, zoom, and using the city to look like the title of the film.

Titles- Titles to show who it is made by and previous successful films are shown, then the title appears from what was the city then zooms out to show Inception.

Toy Story 3- Teaser Trailer

I have also looked at another Disney PIXAR film Toy Story 3.

Analysis of Toy Story 3 Teaser Trailer

Genre- Toy Story 3 has a family genre which you can tell as it is made by Disney PIXAR. As two other films have been made before it we know the genre aswell.

Narrative- It shows the main characters that are well known from the other Toy Story films and consists of footage that does not appear in the film. The clips used were made purely for the Teaser Trailer.

Unique Selling Point- It is a very famous name, Toy Story 3 and people of every age will want to see it.

Target Audience- All ages, families that have grown up with these films.

Music- The known Toy Story theme tune music is quietly played in the background, which reminds people of the previous films.

Shot Types/Camera Angles- Medium shots are used and close ups of the characters. A two shot is used to show Woody's feet and the smaller characters.

Pace- Slow shots, very continuous shots are used.

Dialogue- The characters talking are used to show that the voices are the same and to remind the audience of the characters used. It is the characters making a sign that will stand out.

VoiceOver- None used

Special Effects- All of it is special effects as it is an animated film.

Credits and Intertitles- the titles Toy Story 3, June 2010 are used to show the audience when the film will be released

Genre ideas for Teaser Trailer

I have been thinking about the different genres that my group, Lewis and I may want to do for our Teaser Trailer.

Different Genres we may use:
  • Action
  • Thriller
  • Romantic Comedy
  • FDEHFNE

We have also been thinking about combining two genres for example Action and Thriller.

2012- Teaser Trailer

For the Research and Planning section of our coursework we have to look at different teaser trailers within different genres.

Analysis of 2012

Genre- The genre for this teaser trailer is disaster, which is a favourite genre of the director Roland Emmerich, within this genre action and science fiction is involved to create the disaster genre. This film is of a similar genre to The Day After Tomorrow.

Narrative- Shows events through 3rd person and it is not very personal. Gives the audience a clue that the film is about the world ending and is full of disastrous events, like the wave coming over the mountains.

Unique Selling Point- The unique selling point for this film is probably that it aimed for a world wide audience and it affects everyone as the words the world are used in the teaser. Another reason could be that it is a global catastophy and they are saying that the government wont be able to save us.

Target Audience- People who are intersted in seeing if they believe this is true as this sparked rumours of the world ending. Teenagers to adults, stereotypically mainly males as they may prefer the disastorous genre.

Music- Tense and myserious music is used, it gets louder as the wave gets closer to covering the man in the building. Smashing and droning sound effects are used to add to the tension. The music sounds oriental which makes references to where the man comes from as he is also wearing robes and smashes a gong.

Shot types/Camera angles- Extreme long shots are used to establish the mountains and emphasise the fact that the wave is covering mountains which shows that the wave must be very big.

Pace- Slow shots are used which is very unusual for teaser trailers. The transition dip to black is used alot to show the tension.

Dialogue- No dialogue is used in this teaser trailer, the music builds up the tension and no dialogue is needed.

VoiceOver- None

Special Effects- Special effects are used for example the big wave coming over the mountain this is used to show that the film will use lots of special effects.

Credits and intertitles- Certain sentences are used to make the audience worry, Such as "How would the governments of our planet prepare 6 billion people for the end of the world. They won't". This makes the audience worry and makes them feel that it is fact instead of fiction. The big 2012 titles emphasises the year and when it will happen, the last title you see says 2010 search online, which makes the audiences create a hype about the year and the film.

Disney Pixars UP- Teaser Trailer

This is my PowerPoint presentation on the teaser trailer to Disney Pixars UP.Teaser trailer- Disney Pixar UP

This is the Teaser Trailer for Disney PIXAR'S UP

Up Analysis

Genre- Family/ Adventure

Narrative- An old man in a floating house

Unique Selling Point- Unusual character and unique story line

Target Audience- Families and Children, bright colours are used to attract

Music- In this Teaser Trailer no music is involved.

Shot types/Camera Angles- A continuous medium shot that stays the same

Pace- Slow paced as no other shots are used

Dialogue- The old man says "Good Afternoon" which adds humour as he is being calm and acting normal about him floating in the house

VoiceOver- None

Special Effects- All of the clip is special effects as the film is an animated film.

Credits and Intertitles- The word UP appears as a cloud to show that it is in the sky and gives a clue to what the film is about as we just saw the floating house going up. It also shows the name of the film.

Super 8 - Teaser Trailer

I have watched the teaser trailer for Super 8 a film Jj Abrams and Steven Spielberg.
Here is a link to the teaser trailer http://www.super8-movie.com/

I have looked at the characters, narrative, editing, mise-en-scene and sound. I have also looked at the conventions to a teaser trailer.

Super 8-

  • Quick editing is used to show that it will be full of action, the clips are only a couple of seconds long which gives the effect that is flashes quickly to create suspense and build up.
  • You see a big explosion which creates excitement which draws the audience in.
  • You can hear explosions train noises and muffled voices over a handset which shows trouble, you can also see and hear a can skiding which shows
  • Titles are used to give the audience an idea of where its located and what the genre could be, it says " part of Area 51 had to be closed in 1979" this shows that it could be linked to aliens as area 51 is rumoured to have evidence about aliens. This hints it could be a sci fi genre.
  • The titles show the audience the producer who is Steven Spielberg, who is well known for his films and it shows the directer Jj Abrams who created Lost and Cloverfield which was very successful in the science fiction genre.
  • Both director and producer have high production value
  • Tense music is used to obviously create tension after the explosion has happened
  • Another title says "it arrives", this does not tell us what is arriving and creates a mystery to what the creature could be
  • From a carraige on the train you hear thumping and see bumps where the carraige has been hit so hard, it shows that what ever is inside the carraige wants to get out and is using force
  • You also see the car that creates the explosion looks out of control like someone was fleeing, someone had been made to or something else was helping "it" escape.
  • The titles seem to be fact, when really they are fiction for the film
  • An enigma is created in this teaser because you dont know what "it" could be
  • It tells you the time it could be released "Next summer, It arrives".
  • Super 8 could have different meanings, Super 8 is a type of old fashioned camera and some people thought that it could be an alien spider.
  • Flashing and flickering of lights is used to show the effects of the train crashing into the car.
  • It is dark and is set at night time which creates and eerie atmosphere.

What is a Teaser Trailer?

A teaser trailer is a sneak preview to the film being released, it normally is only 30-60 seconds long and normally uses footage which is not used in the film. It is supposed to create hype so people want to see the theatrical trailer and then the movie. It normally doesnt give away the plot but it does show the main characters of a film. Sometimes a teaser trailer will be very simple and not show any characters at all just a clip with music and sound effects to create a sense of mystery.

Convensions of a Teaser Trailer-
  • Quick cut shots
  • 30-60 Seconds long of footage
  • It creates a hype
  • Makes an expectation of the film
  • Sometimes footage that is not in the film is used
  • Often says name of film, coming soon, next summer etc.
  • Does not give away plot or narrative
  • Its about the genre and sometimes shows the characters
  • Some only use music
  • Some are silent and have one piece of dialogue
  • Text is used to show an understanding of parts like, Many years ago or in 1979.
